Servants Are Not Worth It
(half-tongue-in-cheek): As the BBC documentary "Servants: The True Story of Life Below Stairs" and "Downton Abbey" show us, servants are just not worth it . For one, dealing with people is a lot of trouble. Any employer knows how hard it is to hire good people and to keep them motivated and on task. A pissed-off servant also has six ways from Sunday to get back at you (e.g. your food...). (Really) rich people often complain how much trouble it is to run their staff. It's just too much trouble for Simple Aristocrats.
But, secondly, and most importantly, they're not as necessary as they used to be. Between vacuum cleaners (or even maybe, one day, a decent robot vacuum cleaner), laundry machines, dishwashing machines, kitchen appliances, water on tap, hot(!) water on tap, central heating, most of the tasks of a servant of yesteryear are now handled by machines.
It's fascinating to watch documentaries about servants and realize how most of us in the developed world already enjoy more comforts than many very rich people could enjoy back then. You can watch the whole documentary on youtube, Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.
